Romanesco!

The piece mirrors the 13/8 Fibonacci spirals of a Romanesco cauliflower, utilizing 13/8 polyrhythms and polymeter alongside the octatonic scale.

Pinecone music!

A composition based on the spiraling patterns of pine cone scales.

Pinecone scales grow at intervals of the golden angle, forming spirals whose totals follow the Fibonacci sequence. In small pinecones, these counts are 5 and 8 spirals in opposite directions.

In this composition, the melodic spirals are created by dividing the octave by the golden angle, which yields a neutral sixth interval. In this arrangement, the interval fluctuates, alternating between a major and a minor sixth. Moving in one direction, this sixth forms 5 spirals, while its inverted interval—the third—forms 8 spirals in the opposite direction.

To anchor the entire structure, the drums play 5:8 polyrhythm.

On Haapa (Aspen) percussionist Lassi Piipponen’s rhythmics are based on a transcription of the rustling sound made by aspen leaves in the wind. The Savonlinna Quartet and Sampo Kinnunen’s electric guitar perform a computer-assisted harmony, derived from the physical shape of an aspen leaf and translated into musical notes. This harmony is set in the D Lydian dominant scale (D acoustic scale), which is as bright and luminous as an aspen grove.

Säde (Ray) explores the optimal light wavelengths for photosynthesis—blue (400–475 nm) and red (600–700 nm). Their 3/2 ratio is translated into the piece’s polyrhythmic structures and stacked fifth harmonies.
